  • SPIN: "12:00 am. During the week I had spent in the Midwest covering Lollapalooza, I began to feel like I was in "No Exit" situation. It became clear that "Hell", to quote Sartre, "is other people". And Lollapalooza certainly has a nice supply of people - around 30,000 at each show. So upon returning home to Atlanta I swore up and down that I never wanted to Lollapalooza again. But it didn't take me more than three weeks before I caught voluntarily returning. If it had not been for the fact that I could still get in for free with my media pass, I'm sure I would've stayed at home. But, like the slum poet Eli, I'm happy to have once again ripped off Perry Farrell for $35. 2:00 pm. Wow! L7 sounds pretty good today. Hurry to the main stage. Whoops - it's Green Day. I go and stand on the right side on lawn. The amphitheater looks exactly like the previous five. There is one of those horrible sheds separating the reserved seating from the lawn area. Most people into the show are here on the lawn. Some are trying desperately to form a pit. Green Day seems a mile away, but is keeping us happy. Then, from out of nowhere, it seems, the whole left side of the lawn area erupts, and kids start storming the stage, leaping over seats, bumrushing the ushers. Could it be true? Is there a riot goin' on? Maybe so; I gaze dead center at the last row of seats. An usher hassles some fat kid. The kid gets the usher in a headlock. This is nuts! Hurrah for Green Day! Who would've thunk it? And then as spontaneously as it had begun, a couple of rain drops land on cheek, and I am left spuriously deceived. So it was rain that delivered this? Oh well, I decide to hurdle the seats, too. Now everyone is huddled under the massive shed, and Green Day takes advantage of the situation. The lead singer coerces the crowd to get a 'wave' going, and the frisky trio launches into a medley of 'Eye Of The Tiger' and 'We're Not Gonna Take It'. For the first time at the main stage, I feel privileged to see this event."
