"Within a small but growing circle of punks, Green Day had made a name for itself. During this first tour with Tré, the established indie label IRS Records allegedly approached the band. Founder Miles Copeland, brother of the Police's drummer Stewart Copeland, had signed punk and new wave bands like the Damned, the Go-Go's, and the Buzzcocks, and had also gotten behind R.E.M. early on. But even though it sounded like a solid opportunity, Green Day knew they weren't ready. At the Birmingham show, Dirnt talked to some of the fans and explained that signing with IRS would mean tour buses and hotels, cutting off the direct connection with their audience that they had just started to build. They continued on a cross-country tour in their van, honing their approach on older songs and developing new ones."
Boston Post-Herald: "When Green Day stopped in Birmingham before that Auburn show in 1991, they played in the living room of a house on 14th Street South. At the time, they talked about how they had just turned down a deal with IRS Records. Dirnt explained that if they did sign such a contract, they would end up touring in a bus, staying in hotels instead of on random couches and doing telephone interviews. They were still just kids, he reasoned, there would be time for success later."
