Kirsty Lohman, The Connected Lives of Dutch Punks: Contesting Subcultural Boundaries: "The rise of pop punk - specifically its commercial success - was not entirely welcomed by other, older generations of punk, who often either reject or negate it in their narratives. Jacob remembers a young Green Day touring Europe and begging for gigs in Gronigen so that they could afford the petrol to the next venue, he described his subsequent shock when later the same year they signed to a major label and appeared on the MTV awards. Jacob argued that pop punk 'is actually more pop music' (Jacob), whilst Jaap commented that, 'all that poppy punk stuff, or hardcore poppy punk stuff: I think it's idiot music' (Jaap)."
