Green Day in Gryfino

Show Details

Location: Gryfinski Dom Kultury in Gryfino, Poland
Date: November 10, 1991
Notes:
  • ElanyC: "Green Day were described then like a 'cheerful punk band from the US'. They played their first concert on November the 10th at Gryfinski Dom Kultury, which was mainly attended by punks from Szczecin. Some Polish band opened that show."
  • gdk.com.pl: "About four years after formation, Green Day went to long European tour, including Poland - Bialystok, Bydgoszcz and Gryfino. In memories of Krzysztof Kozak, the man who put on a series of events in Gryfinski Dom Kultury under the name of 'Ewolucja', Green Day contacted them to book a concert in the city. The boys arrived on a borrowed car from Netherlands. They didn't even bring their own equipment! So they borrowed the equipment from the promoters. The band played for food (one vegetarian and three regular meals), beer and a place to stay. Even the contract was called 'Anti-Contract'."
  • Billie Joe Armstrong: "Sure, I remember, it was in the winter of 1991. We played shows, in Gryfino, Bydgoszcz, Bialystock. We played with the English band Sink and the Polish band opened our first show, but unfortunately, I can't remember the name. It was a typical independent tour, we played on borrowed equipment and slept in some people's houses. I plugged into stereo sound system that night. I plugged in my guitar - and I know a lot of garage bands these day would think this is really cool - but the noise was...the cleanest sound you ever heard. And I was trying to communicate with these guys who had plugged me in the noise I wanted, so I made the noise of a distorted guitar with my mouth, and they ran out and come back two hours later with the one distortion pedal in the whole town. I plug it in and it sounds like a duck farting. But we played and it was a great show."
