  • Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: "Long before it set out to be some important band making rock operas, Green Day was just a trio of American idiots. Exhibit A: the band's eye-popping spectacle at X-Fest, during which Billie Joe Armstrong joked, 'I'm the king of punk and heavy metal all rolled into one.' To demonstrate, Green Day barrelled through songs from 'Dookie' and 'Insomniac,' with Armstrong ending up in just his leopard undies, which is more than the singer from Jimmie's Chicken Shack had on when he crashed the stage. It wasn't over till bassist Mike Dirnt toppled his amps and smashed his bass and drummer Tre Cool doused his kit in lighter fluid and torched it. Amid the wreckage, Armstrong sang, 'Hope you had the time of your life.'"
  • Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: "Green Day (Coca Cola Star Lake Amphitheatre, May 25). By far the year's most entertaining show, it reached its climax when Tre Cool, the drummer, doused his kit in kerosene and somehow caught the stage on fire. Hendrix may have done it first, but I doubt it was nearly as funny. So what do you do for an encore? If you're Billie Joe Armstrong, you trash through a heartfelt rendition of Time of Your Life (Good Riddance), your radio ballad, alone on a stage full of broken equipment. Fueled by airtight hooks and raw abandon, Green Day motored through a hilarious hit filled set with an energy most acts half their age would be advised to envy. It was Armstrong's showmanship that really set the band apart, though. The man is a natural, on a level with Ilay Davies of the Kinks. And trust me when I say I wouldn't make that comparison lightly."
