Green Day in New York, NY

Show Details

Location: Vans Warped Tour, Randall's Island, Downing Stadium in New York, USA
Date: July 24, 2000
Notes:
  • MTV: "Apparently heavy doses of punk are no match for torrential rain. Saturday's Vans Warped Tour stop at New York City's Randall's Island was postponed after hours of steady rain flooded the ground that was to have hosted the show. The rain began on Friday, and the Warped camp pulled the plug on the show on Saturday before getting things started, but after many had already made the trek out to the then swamp-like grounds of Randall's Island. Green Day ... will now return to New York on July 24, which was to have been an off-date between Warped stops in Detroit and Washington, DC."
  • "We were the first people on the whole line. When the gates opened, I was the first person to step foot into the field. Time for Green Day. Well, I got there and I was pretty close. I saw Mike very well, but I also really wanted to see Billie Joe. The pit was rough but I lived. So many people sat on my head! This one girl who got lifted up was wearing a lace blue thong! When Billie Joe asked us what we wanted to hear, someone requested J.A.R. and Billie asked Mike and Tre, 'Is that OK?' Mike said, 'How about we sing about our friends that are alive?' I felt so bad. So they played Going To Pasalacqua. I was so happy because that is one of my favorite songs! Well, I had lots of fun singing along with them and being squashed at the same time. I can't wait until I do it again."
  • "The line was way too long, considering last year there was no line. At one point a bunch of people broke down the fence and everyone came running out. I manage to move closer to the front gates, though. We were in - time for music. I saw Save Ferris, NOFX, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Suicide Machines and tons of other bands, but let's get straight to Green Day. I'm 4'11", and after the first song I was in severe damage, but refused to leave. Later on, I heard a voice that sounded very familiar, and... My friend Chris got to play guitar on stage. I bet that rocked his little world. I was moving closer to the front with every song. I could see Mike the whole time and Billie just about half the time. Though I didn't pay attention on Tre, but I my eye immediately caught Tre lighting his drums on fire. I don't remember the setlist exactly - but the first song was Welcome To Paradise and the last was Going To Pasalacqua". No J.A.R. though. It's better to sing about friends that aren't dead but alive, according to dear old Mike."
  • "We caught the Bosstones, NOFX and some other bands, but Green Day was coming on at 7:30. I was already at the South Stage when Millencolin was on, an hour before Green Day. I fought my way to the front, but got stuck to the right of the stage, up against the fence. To say the least I was in pain. I had the weight of the crowd on my left side and security pushed metal crates to make sure the flimsy wire fence would stay straight, on my right. But it was worth it to see Billie - he was all that I could see from where I was. Billie said to the crowd, 'I never saw a band snort more coke than this one right here,' and pointed to Fat Mike. The crowd requested J.A.R., but Mike said, 'Come on, I don't wanna sing about a dead friend.' And Billie said, 'Alright, that shit was negated by Mike, what else?' And that's when they played Christie Road and Going To Pasalacqua. Billie forgot some words to it and sang God knows what, but got back in at the chorus. Altogether I think it was a 40-minute set. Tre did light his drums on fire, but I couldn't see it, oh well. The show was so awesome. It was truly an experience."
