  • Nick: "Well, the big day came and I was all pumped up. We got to the Fairgrounds about an hour early, just so we can see all the booths before the some odd 12,000 people showed up. Green Day was to play around 5:30, so in the meantime we just checked things out. But when about 4:15 came around I didn't want to take any chances of not getting right in the front, so I hung out at the stage they were going to play on from 4:15 until after Green Day was done. When the show started I had split up from my friend Chris. Later I found out that he had made his way backstage and was up behind Green Day while they were playing. But, while Green Day was playing I had a picture in one hand of all my Green Day stuff on my walls in my room, and a camera in the other. Billie stopped playing for a while and asked the crowd for some clothes. He got a shirt tossed up to him, and he wore it on his head. He said it was his 'pretty hair.' I then waved my picture up in the air, and Billie said to the crowd, 'Hey, that's us! and it's a picture of your room.' I did get a few real good pictures off, and near the end of the show I had 2 left. And I wanted to save them for the small chance that I would get to meet the band, but I didn't. So as Tre started to light his drum set on fire I took the last two pictures, and then they all ran offstage. I was still in a trance after Green Day. So I went to wait for Chris at our meeting spot. I waited for about half an hour, then just as I was about to leave two people that I've never met before came up to me. 'Your name Nick?' 'Yeah,' I said. They went on to tell me that Chris had made his way back stage and had them go find me. I mean, Chris couldn't just leave that backstage just in case he couldn't get back. So I sort of slipped back with him, just as security kicked out two people (just like us) that didn't have a backstage pass. We walked around for a while (Chris already knew what bus Green Day was in). We stopped to talk to a guy that got Mike's bass that was broken during the show, and the band signed. I showed him my picture of my room. (That was my backstage pass. I figured if anyone stopped us they would see how much of a nutcase I am about Green Day, they would understand that I had to meet them.) Anyway, that guy was like, 'Hey, here is a drum head from Tre's drum set.' I was so stoked! It was way cool. We then went to the side of the bus. And there was Mike trying to do tricks on a skateboard. Now the cool thing was that there was only like four other people talking to him beside Chris and I. I showed Mike my picture of my room. He thought it was cool. He told me about a girl that they met in California that had Green Day pictures in her room too, but they were all framed. Each little picture. But he signed my drum head, 'Thankx Nick ... Mike Dirnt SUX.' We talked to Mike for a while about skateboarding and kung-fu. He was funny. He couldn't do very much on the board. Then Billie came out of the bus. He was eating a banana. I was real nervous, so I asked Mike to go over and show him my picture. He told me to go over myself. I was shaking. I walked over and said, 'Hey Billie, I was the guy in the front with the picture of my room.' He remembered and said, 'Wow, you have a lot of time on your hands.' I told him that the picture was only one side of my room. He laughed a little. He then signed my drum head. We all talked to him about his wife and kid for a while. Then about his tattoos. He was really nice. And me without film. Luckily there was a guy from Idaho that agreed to take some pictures and send them to me. Now Tre was a different story. As we were talking to Billie he made his way out of the bus, then around the other side with a plate full of food. I run to cut him off on the other side of the bus. 'Hey Tre, this is a picture of my room.' (I know I was showing everyone.) 'Wow, that's cool,' he said. I asked him to sign my drum head, but he wanted to sit down and eat first. He was gone down the way for about an hour, then we just went to find him. He signed it in his Tre Cool way. We hung out with Mike and Billie for a bit longer, the we said bye. They told Chris and I thanks for being fans, and Mike told us not to drink or party too much that night. That would have to be the best experience in my life. There is no question in my mind."
