  • San Francisco Gate: "Sometimes playing last at a rock show is more a curse than a privilege. Pity the headliner, for instance, that gets blown off the stage by the band before it. Blink-182 endured that indignity Saturday at the Shoreline Amphitheatre, where the trio found itself eclipsed by Green Day, its co-headliner on the Pop Disaster Tour, which reaches the Arena in Oakland tonight. Blink's 60-minute, paint-by-numbers set paled in the aftermath of the Oakland punk-pop pioneers' rousing performance. There's poetic justice in this: Blink-182 closed the night because it's a fresh, though hardly inspired, band selling albums by the millions; Green Day is less platinum-plated these days, but broke ground for Blink and others by taking punk-pop to the top of the charts in the '90s. Yet judging by Saturday's sets, Green Day remains the hotter band. Following a brief set by opening act Jimmy Eat World, the trio -- assisted by extra guitarist Jason White -- launched its 75-minute set with the new song Maria, then barreled through a string of greatest hits that kept the crowd singing along even as it danced itself breathless. Looking like a vintage punk in a black shirt and a skinny white tie, singer- guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong was a consummate ham, leaping and bouncing across the stage, goading fans, climbing on stacks of speakers to shower the audience with a squirt gun and leading the group through spastic punk jam sessions. Bassist Mike Dirnt and drummer Tre Cool, also in fashionable black, played with their usual kinetic abandon. The set list included standard favorites (Longview, Welcome to Paradise, Brain Stew, When I Come Around, Basket Case and the acoustic Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)), newer anthems (Minority, Waiting) and some surprises (the Green Day oldie Disappearing Boy, covers of an Operation Ivy song and Sweet Home Alabama, two horn players dressed in mariachi outfits). Amid its cavalcade of hits, the band took time to show that it hasn't lost its punk ethics -- first by inviting the crowd up to the front of the stage, then by pulling three young fans onstage to form an impromptu band that produced at least one star-for-a-night: blue-mohawked, 13-year-old Jacob 'Jake' Willis of Newark, who rocked his bass like a pro."
