Green Day in Washington, DC

Show Details

Location: HFStival, RFK Stadium in Washington, USA
Date: May 27, 2001
Notes:
  • Steve Hackett: "I had been standing in the front row at the 2001 HFestvial at R.F.K. Stadium in Washington, D.C. for 7 or 8 hours, being pushed against the security barricade by the thousands of people behind me. Green Day was preparing to hit the stage next and I was about to pass out from exhaustion and thirst, so the thought of jumping over the barricade and making my way up into the stands to watch the set from a comfortable distance was looming. Something inside me said to stay put, at least for the first few songs. I was having such a great time once they started that all my feelings of being tired and worn down had melted away, and it was already a half hour into their performance. They began to play the old Operation Ivy song 'Knowledge' and suddenly the singer announces that they need someone from the crowd to get on stage and play guitar for them. With the minimal confidence that I know how to strum out a few power chords and nothing impressive in my skillset related to the stringed instrument, I promptly raise my hand and make eye contact with the little singer. Before I know it, everyone around me is pointing at me and trying to get Billie Joe's attention. The video explains the rest. It will always be a highlight in my memory bank, and appreciate it for being one of the few chances in a lifetime you get to really seize the moment and take advantage of an opportunity most won't have. The attendance at R.F.K. Stadium that day was approximately 65,000 people."
