This parallels the less-than-desirable state that Ashley is in: struggling with substance abuse and looking for somewhere to go. Now, the narrator sees Ashley's present situation and feels sorry for her, but he chooses to turn his back on her as she did to him. She's crying on his cold shoulder, as he says.
